8th Grade One Word Self Portraits

8th Graders recently finished a very impressive project. Each student chose a word to describe themselves and used only that word to complete the lines that make up the picture of themselves. Each turned out unique and showed each students' personality!

Happy May Day

Happy May Day! As a special May Day gift to you, I have 3 projects to share!

The first is from 2nd graders. They learned about printmaking and self-portraits. We combined the two concepts together and created printed self-portraits. Hanging in the hallway is each students printing plate and one of the two prints they made. Each student chose their best print for the hallway.

The 4th graders have been hard at work at another project based on still life. This time, the students observed a bowl of fruit and did a drawing of it in class. We also looked at the artist Georges Rouault and his paintings. We noticed that he had dark black outlines around his objects which inspired the black outlines and stained glass-like lines in the background.

1st graders have been learning about how to make things look far away and close up in a picture. For this artwork we created 3 parts: the grass, the dinosaur and the trees and sky. Each piece was either the foreground, middle ground or background. Ask your student to tell you which is which!

1st Grade Self-Portraits

The first graders completed very vibrant self-portraits in oil pastel. We talked about dark black outlines to make things stand out as well as facial proportions, details and craftsmanship. Each one is unique just like the student who made it!

2nd Grade Weavings

2nd graders explored warm and cool colors in this project. They used warm colors to create one sheet of paper and cool colors for the other. Each student chose one color scheme to be cut up. They set up their papers as a loom and weaved the cut up strips into it. The results are stunning!

4th Grade Clay Faces

The 4th graders looked at artist Kimmy Cantrell and together we described his style of work. We talked about relief artwork and what relief means. The students were then given the assignment of making a clay relief face inspired by the artist. After the clay was fired, they used oil pastel to color directly on the clay. To finish the piece they covered the whole thing in black paint and rinsed it off. This is a technique that I had never tried before and I think they turned out great!

Spring Break!

When we return to school on March 25 check back for clay projects, 2nd grade weavings and much more!

Kindergarten Self-Portraits

Kindergarteners learned about mixed media and self-portraits for this project. They used construction paper, markers, colored pencils and yarn to create a picture of themselves. Enjoy!

Happy (Abstract) Valentines Day

2nd Graders used toilet paper rolls to create a heart shaped stamp. They stamped their entire papers to create an abstract painting.  The stairwell looks very festive!

4th Grade Birch Trees

This is one of my favorite lessons to do with fourth grade. There are a lot of skills within this one project and the results are always impressive!

Fourth graders talked about warm and cool colors and chose one of the schemes for their sky. We then looked at birch trees and created them to go in the foreground. Finally, details and shadows were added with black paint to show a light source.

Welcome to the CKS Art Blog. Instead of posting individual links to different projects, all types of projects and classroom happenings will be posted here on the blog.

The projects currently hanging in the hallway include these collages done by 5th grade. They used a variety of paper to create a collage. They then did a drawing of an instrument from a source photo. They transferred their drawing to their collage and painted on top. These were inspired by the works of Picasso.
